# `Sensor` type

A built-in network probe that gathers data about a [Device](https://wartiva.com/api-docs/types/device.html) or [Network](https://wartiva.com/api-docs/types/network.html): host discovery, TCP and UDP port scans, and protocol-specific probes such as HTTP, TLS, SSH, SMB, DNS, SNMP, UPnP, mDNS, and DHCP. Every organization has the same sensor catalog, returned by [sensors](https://wartiva.com/api-docs/queries/sensors.html); [SensorScope](https://wartiva.com/api-docs/types/sensor-scope.html) objects decide which sensors may run against which devices. A sensor runs in one or more `zones`: LAN sensors run directly on an endpoint, while SAE and PUBLIC sensors run through a [SensorRequest](https://wartiva.com/api-docs/types/sensor-request.html). The network services a sensor discovers are recorded as [Service](https://wartiva.com/api-docs/types/service.html) objects that name the sensor that last found them.

| `name` - [`String!`](https://wartiva.com/api-docs/types/string.html) | The display name of this sensor corresponding to its type, localized to the caller's language. |
| `description` - [`String!`](https://wartiva.com/api-docs/types/string.html) | A description of what this sensor reports on, localized to the caller's language. |
